THE LEARNING CURVE CONTINUES
The 2005 Kumho Tyres Australian Formula 3 Championship continued last weekend at Phillip Island Raceway with Tim Macrow spending much of the weekend coming to terms with his Dallara F301.
Daily reports follow.
Friday:
Feeling a bit rusty having not tested his Dallara since Mallala Tim spent much of Friday adapting his car to the fast and undulating Phillip Island layout.
Having set 5th and 4th fastest times after the two practice sessions Tim concluded that the base setup that was in the car was good, but more fine tuning would be required before Qualifying.
Saturday:
After two productive practice sessions on Friday and some overnight changes Tim was confident of a good result in the two qualifying sessions however the changes didn't produce the desired result.
"The car was not perfect and we know were we can improve", the 2004 Formula Ford championship runner up said having set 4th fastest time.
Tim shot up the timesheets in qualifying two however to sit on the front row alongside the 2004 Formula 3 Champion Karl Reindler.
"The setup changes made were a big improvement, and I'm much happier with the handling of the car now".
Tim was only two tenths off taking the pole position.
Sunday:
After a slow start in Race 1, Tim managed to finish in third position and set the fastest lap of the race. "The car was good but after a slow start it was a bit late to challenge for the lead".
The race was won by Aaron Caratti from Michael Trimble.
After making up for the tardy start in race 1, race 2 saw Tim lead from the start and build a commanding break over the chasing pack, setting the fastest lap of the race in the process. From that point however the hunter became the hunted as the field closed in on the #7 TMR Dallara.
"The car was great for 4 laps then started to carry too much oversteer. In hindsight we went out with the tyre pressures too high and on lap four I had a huge slide at southern loop, got into the marbles and slid off the track".
After getting out of the sand trap Tim recovered for sixth position.
The next round of the championship is at Queensland Raceway near Ipswich.
