TIM MACROW’S FINE FORM CONTINUES AT ALBERT PARK
A Last minute gesture from car owner Maher Algadri was the saving grace that enabled Victorian sensation Tim Macrow win two of the four Australian Formula 3 races held at the Formula 1 ING Australian Grand Prix in Melbourne last weekend.

Originally set to sit out the meeting to conserve his budget for the championship proper, Macrow stepped into the Team BRM seat regularly driven by direct championship rival Stuart Kostera.

Macrow, 23, was keen to repeat the fine performance shown in the opening championship round at Eastern Creek Raceway where he finished the weekend with a third in race one and a terrific win in race two.

Qualifying didn’t pan out as planned for Macrow, the young Victorian driver unable to find a clear run on the circuit and spending some time in pit lane – eventually ending the session in eighth position.

Race one of the weekend was staged late Thursday afternoon with Tim staying out of trouble during the race avoiding all the contact around him and, with a brilliant passing maneuver, Macrow passed Italian Marco Mapelli to take second position in the final stages of the race.

Starting from the front row for the second race, Tim slotted into second behind Charlie Hollings and slipstreamed past him on the opening lap. A brief Safety Car period didn’t trouble Macrow and a hard final lap sprint to the flag ended with Macrow leading comfortably and taking the race win - his first at the Albert Park circuit.

Saturday’s third race proved to be much the same with Macrow starting from pole position.

With hot competition coming from Charlie Hollings in the Astuti Motorsport car, Macrow had a fight on his hands after Hollings got a fantastic jump off the line to lead the field. However, Macrow was able to pass his British rival to assume the race lead mid race and from there he was never headed – taking his second win from three starts.

Hollings’ again made the best start in race four but it wasn’t long before Macrow closed the margin and applied pressure to his weekend-long rival.

On lap four Macrow was alleged to have passed Hollings under a yellow flag through turn one. Tim would go on and take the provisional race win until a stewards hearing later in the evening overturned the decision and placed Hollings into the race win.

Whilst the race four penalty was a source of disappointment, Macrow said that the weekend as a whole was a successful one.

”I’m absolutely stoked with the result,” he enthused.

”The car felt fantastic all weekend and I didn’t feel troubled out there. It’s a credit to the crew that they would let one of their key championship rivals into the team to drive for this weekend and they have prepared a fantastic car.”

Macrow said the fact he had the speed to win was a consolation prize for loosing the race four win.

”It was disappointing but we showed that we had the speed to win comfortably so I’m still really happy.” He said.

”I have to thank Maher Algadri and the team from BRM for making this happen. It might not be a championship round but it’s still an event that means a lot to me so to be able to have a great weekend like this is fantastic.”

Tim Macrow will next be in action at Sydney’s Oran Park raceway in April for the second round of the Kumho Tyres Australian Formula 3 Championship for the CAMS Gold Star.
